Second Edition Differences

The 2nd edition of the ISO 24165 DTI standard, published in June 2025, reflects two years of market feedback and refinement. It remains fundamentally the same but is clearer and more streamlined for the digital assets space. All tokens retain the same DTI for full backward compatibility. Enhancements, additions, and changes are listed below.

Enhancements

Digital Ledger Identifier

In Edition 1 of the standard, a DLT was identified through its native token or by using DTI Type 2 (DLT without a native token).
Edition 2 introduces the concept of the Digital Ledger Identifier (DLI) to separate these definitions. All DLTs previously identified through their native tokens will receive a new DLI, and the data elements used to identify the ledger are moved to this new DLI. The DTI for all native tokens remains unchanged.

Ethereum example

Edition 1

Ethereum token and Ethereum ledger share DTI: X9J9K872S and normative attributes

Edition 2

Ethereum token informative attributes:

  • Digital token identifier: X9J9K872S
  • Digital token identifier type: 1 (protocol digital token)
  • Protocol token distributed ledger: 9DDKPFN21

Ethereum ledger normative attributes:

  • Digital ledger identifier: 9DDKPFN21
  • Genesis block and fork history moved from X9J9K872S
  • Auxiliary tokens on Ethereum Ledger
  • Auxiliary digital token distributed ledger: 9DDKPFN21

Additions

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

  • The scope for digital token identifiers (DTIs) has been extended to include non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

Issuer / Maintainer

  • Addition of Issuer and Maintainer as informative, optional fields to all DTIs and DLIs
  • This includes names as well as external identifiers, like LEI and BIC

Changes

Functionally Fungible Group

  • Functionally Fungible Group has been renamed Equivalent Digital Token Group
  • Equivalent digital token grouping reason has been added to the registry

Genesis Block Information

  • Genesis block renamed to Anchor block
  • Anchor block height data element added where genesis block is either not known.

Native Token

  • Native token has been renamed protocol token.

Underlying Asset External Identifiers

  • Underlying asset external identifiers have been renamed to digital asset external identifiers.
